There are two major universities located in Dayton, Ohio; the University of Dayton, and the Wright State University. The University of Dayton is a private, Catholic institution founded in 1850 by the Marianist order. The Wright State University is a public university, which became a state university in 1967. Wright State University has the only medical school in the Dayton area, and the University of Dayton has the only American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school in the Dayton area.
Dayton is also home to one of the country's leading community colleges; Sinclair Community College (founded as a YMCA college in 1887). Sinclair Community College recently opened satellite campuses in two neighboring cities, and prior to those openings, the main campus one of the largest (by enrollment) community college campuses in North America. Sinclair Community College has been recognized as a Vanguard Learning College by the League for Innovation in the Community College ("Vanguard" is a term designated by the League for Innovation to recognize the top twelve two-year institutions in North America that are learner-centered. "Learning College" is a culture consisting of an attitude that focuses constantly on student and learner access and success.).
